At the outset,
I would like to let the readers know
that this is the last time
that I will write about the Miss Tourism issue, because it is pointless
to continue as I have no power to stop
this shame. I was recently invited to join the blog’s team,
which I keenly accepted because in here, we
are given the opportunity to voice our opinions regardless of our political association or beliefs.
Notably and a big surprise for me, my last post had an enormous impact on the readers of this blog, one of the members is absolutely thrilled as it achieved a record numbers of readers, in less than twenty four hours, it was read by nearly 2000 people.
Notwithstanding, I did not join the famous Timor Hau Nian Doben to do propaganda or political sensationalism, my aim is to write what I feel and to try to make the readers aware of the problems that my people face, in their daily struggle to live. No more, no less than that.
Thus, my writing today is dedicated to our First Lady, Isabel Ferreira. Mrs Ferreira’s recent behaviour towards the Miss Tourism subject can, and almost certainly will impact negatively on the reputation of one of the most prominent and respectable politic figures of our country, Taur Matan Ruak. He is a hero in his own right, a beloved politician and so far his repute is one of a kind in this nation, we call him amongst us, “The Untouchable”.
On the other hand, to this date, I am not aware of the Head of the State opinion regarding the Miss Tourism contest. Taur Matan Ruak has been truly busy visiting our people in the remote areas of the country, he is a firsthand witness of the appalling living conditions of these communities. Can he approve such a competition that will truly only benefit and amuse a handful of people, the elite to be more precisely? Will he go against his promises during the electoral campaign? Will he be willing to lose the love, respect and admiration of his beloved people? Will he risk his remarkable reputation in the name of a beauty contest?
For this reason, Taur Matan Ruak, as a Head of State, we, the people of Timor-Leste, have the right to know where he stands. If he chooses to remain silent, then we can assume that he is in favour of the contest, he will be “guilty” of this charade by omission, and without a doubt, he betrayed the aspirations and dreams of the people of Timor-Leste. I have to point out that there are no gains for the country and its people with such an event, it will be exclusively entertainment for a handful of people, at the expenses of the Timorese people’s suffering and misery.
Additionally, my counsel to Isabel Ferreira is to be careful with her actions as our people are not as ignorant as she may think or portray them. If her husband aspires a second mandate as a President or as we all heard, to become the next Prime-Minister of this country, the other political parties and candidates will recall the voters, what she did in regards of the Miss Tourism issue. Taur Matan Ruak will suffer the political consequences of her wife’s vain attitude towards this contest. In reality, I will venture to say that nine out of ten Timorese, are against the event Miss Tourism. They are the voters Mrs Ferreira, the Tourism Minister will not be a good ally to your husband at the next election, in fact, to anyone he will be an asset, quite the opposite.
Mrs Ferreira should check the comments regarding this issue on Facebook and perhaps she will feel ashamed of the damage that she is causing to one of the Fathers of this new nation. It is fairly revolting to see the name of Taur Matan Ruak associated with this deviation that his wife insists to pursue. It profoundly hurts to see the disrespect that she devotes not only to the Timorese people, but also to her husband - an East Timorese national hero.
However, it is not only Taur Matan Ruak’s reputation that she is damaging, her own repute is at stake too, the names that people are calling her are unquestionably sad and not appropriate for a First Lady. The odds are turning against her.
Furthermore, one lady of this blog just informed me that a pacific demonstration will be held during five days if this charade continues. We are all muddled up with the levels of violence in our country, it is truly a surprise that the violence continues in Timor-Leste? Bluntly, in my viewpoint, this country will never be able to achieve peace and will not be capable to stop the violence altogether, whereas social injustice persists.
Ironically, the destabilization of the country comes from where we least expected. The perpetuation of social inequality is also fuelled by Isabel Ferreira, as she applauds and supports a preposterous activity, which will cost the poor Timorese hundreds of thousands of dollars. In the meantime more than half of our people are starving, hospitals lack medications and medical equipment, absence of clean water in a lot of communities and households, our schools are “screaming” for chairs, tables, books and the list continues. Just to name a few areas in this country that urgently need attention of the people in charge of this nation.

Violence in Timor-Leste will come merely as a surprise to the fools or to the uneducated people, because social justice and peace are strictly correlated – no doubt about it.
