The country cannot continue with this kind of governance

.

By Moisey

It has been ten months since this government has been elected to the top office and nothing has changed compare to the previous government.

The government failed to press the three main issues raised in the election campaign – increase the amount of money the fund contributed to state budget, to attract foreign loans for infrastructure improvement projects, long-term investment in road and electricity and water supplies.

Yet this government still have the nerve to tell the people that they have delivered the services that were put upon them. They simple ignore that very little or nothing has been made by the government since occupied the office.

Unfortunately the total lack of accountability, broken promises and continued poor performance within this government has made the people believe that things have not changed since than.

Over the past months we have witnessed extraordinary events occurred one after another within this government. For instance, we have seen and heard over and over again about corruption involving staffs, members and families of this government, about nepotism, about the abuse of power, about unpaid salaries and about monies and funds went missing without any trace. Just to name a few otherwise the list would go on and on.

With this entire ordeal, we see or heard little or nothing coming from the so-called opposition. When you are an opposition like Timor Leste, you have a responsibility because they are a representatives of the people in the parliament. It’s seems that the opposition exist just to make up the numbers, an opposition that just goes with the flow.

This is the time that the opposition should make the people voice, concern and suffering be heard.  They should play their role fervently and not as merely a member of the parliament. They should sent a strong message to the government and demand for reform within the government.  The blaming games and finger pointing is over, empty promises must stop and its time for the government to move up a level to be a real player in managing the country affairs.

However more conveniently, the opposition should remind the government that their words or their statement should reflect their action, because so far what this government did and said make the people of Timor Leste more susceptible.  They the government create more uncertainty within the community.

Also, the nations’ finances are so grave and urgent as such its demands prompt investigation and setting up a mechanism whereby the donors and others agency would get to scrutinize the book. This is to ensure that the financial management practices within this government are accounted for.

The Western Donors have a say in this regard. They should stop being timid about this whole process. They should a bit forceful and demand more accountability from this government.  They should say since we paying for this we need to understand what you are doing with the money/funds.

Unless the western donors demand that, nothing is going to change any time soon.

For ten years of independence The Timorese Governments has been conveniently cloaked in many controversies. Such controversies serves the people of Timor Leste poorly.

The country cannot continue with this kind of governance.
