Baucau - The Bishop of Baucau, Basilio do Nascimento, said that
according to what he sees that is going on, the "Miss" pageant is
more another form of enslavement of women, than tourism promotion.
"Because in this matter, organizations that are part of it, impose
contractual obligations on the women who participate. Then whether
they like it or not, the women have to fulfill the terms of the
contracts agreed to by them with the organizations," said Bishop
Basil the Timor Post, in its residence in Baucau last week.
The Pontiff Basilio has enunciated theology on equality, and
promoting human rights, and asks where does fit the "Miss" pageant
fit into all of this? But the question that was put to him was: How
does the Miss Timor pageant promote women in Timor?
"Sometimes the clothing, we can see that is not consistent with
the dignity of women, but they must simply fulfill what is demanded
of them in the contract. When speaking of promoting Timorese woman, I
put some question marks, I have to say that at the very least, they
still have not explained how this event will promote women in Timor, "he said.
Bishop Basilio said that when he studied in Paris (France) in the
years 1979 and 1980, they had an identical event and about fifty
thousand young people protested against the event.
"I do not know if France continues to organize the competition
(the"Miss pageant") and they "Miss" it or not.
But many people say
that this is considered as a promotion of women, but many others do
not think so," he explained.
The Bishop said that, we still do not have the infrastructure for
tourism, to receive tourists to they enjoy the beauty of our land,
but are instead more concerned with "Miss Timor".
"For this reason, I think instead of doing the promotion of
tourism infrastructure, we seek to promote human tourism," said the Bishop.
